“20 minutes of action.” Those were the words used by Brock Turner’s father as he referred to the rape his son committed. Brock Turner, 20, was a student and on the swimming team at Stanford University. Turner was charged and convicted of the intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person and penetration of an unconscious person. Turner’s sentence for this crime has outraged citizens from one end of the map to the other. Turner was sentenced to six months in jail.
A lot of the outcry was about the judge. Judge Persky, in the Santa Clara County Superior Court, stated that “a prison sentence would have a severe impact on him. I don’t think he will be a danger to others.” After this statement was released over the news airways; by Tuesday morning over a 191,000 people had signed a petition to recall Judge Persky (link below). A quote from the petition states: “Judge Persky failed to see that the fact that Brock Turner is a white male star athlete at a prestigious university does not entitle him to leniency. He also failed to send the message that sexual assault is against the law regardless of social class, race, gender, or other factors. Please help rectify this travesty to justice.” District Attorney Jeff Rosen stated that although he disagreed with the judge’s punishment, he doesn’t believe the judge should be removed from the bench.
In spite of all the people against Turner, there are still some that are for him. His ex-girlfriend wrote a letter to the judge saying that Turner wasn’t capable rape. The letter goes on to say what a nice, loving guy he is. I’m sorry, but a nice, loving guy doesn’t rape women. Conscious or unconscious. This young man should have been sentenced to the full extent of his crime. It really makes me thinks about how corrupt the state of Florida is. If you notice this is not the first unjust case that has been tried in Florida; and lets not even get into the voting problems.
